So, why is Velvet so popular?

07 March 2022

The Velvet Movement

It does seem like velvet is everywhere at the moment, but is it here to stay? Apparently so, and it’s going to get even more popular! Not only is velvet a movement in itself, but it’s making big impressions across many current and predicted interior trends. Velvet has long been associated with dark, deep colours, but recently we have seen velvet get a modern twist making it a favourable fabric.

So, what is it about velvet everybody loves?

To touch velvet is soft, warm and inviting; it offers a feeling of luxury. Long associated with the wealthy, velvet became more widely available in the 1900s and by the 1970s, a firm favourite with celebrities making it increasingly popular. Fast forward to today, and people still love velvet and its modern transformation. The introduction of a softer palette has allowed velvet to blend into rooms instead of its previous dominating characteristics. The colour evolvement has also allowed velvet to lend itself to various applications across the interior industry, from chairs to sofas, cushions, curtains, lampshades, and so much more.

Right on Trend

Not only is velvet a trend in itself, but it’s having a significant influence across other interior trends proving just how popular and versatile velvet fabric really is!

Curve Appeal

The furniture industry is seeing a big move to more relaxed curvy shaped designs. This follows on from the bigger movement of introducing more curves into the home through architecture design and curved objects like mirrors, lamps and vases through to tables, chairs, and sofas. Not an entirely new trend, curved furniture has been around for a while but was always seen as oversized and high-end with an art over practical feel. Now, however, the curve style is making waves on the high street with a more commercial design style, replacing some of the more long-standing traditional models. Velvet is dominant across the various curved furniture, adding that luxurious feel to a design. Colour-wise this trend allows a free range from dark deep rich tones to bright, eye-popping palettes.

Nature-inspired/earthy tones

Moving on from the domination of Green, the nature-inspired trend combines earthy textures, organic shapes, raw materials and greenery, bringing a mindful feeling of balance and calm to a space. Centring around the importance of colour, this trend reflects natural occurring colours and brings them into the home. The sense of texture is equally essential, coming through in the use of materials like wood and textiles. Velvet sits well within this trend, providing that tactile texture; the colour palette leans on the soft greys, greens, browns, mustards and sky blues. The more modern-day velvet colours offer that perfect balance of tone, softness and sophistication. Across our Velvet ranges, we offer fabrics that fit this trend perfectly, from our soft toned Sunningdale range to the textured distressed Heritage collection.

Retro Revival

According to many, the 70s is making a return, but with a modern twist, taking the glam element of the decade, this movement is to go softer, less rational and more collage in design. Elle décor describes the move as simply looking for soft, inviting, plump and rounded. Warm tones, curves and patterns bring this decade into 2022. This trend likes using colour, from mustard yellows and oranges to strong reds and plums. Velvet was the fabric of the 70s, and this trend allows you to add it into your home in many ways, whether it’s a comfy chair, a big plumped sofa or a beautifully curved headboard.

Velvet with a twist

Like everything, velvet has moved with the times, and its popularity continues, but it’s always good to push the boundaries that little bit more, mix things up. We see velvet with added elements, such as a distressed look. Adding a textured look to a velvet brings a new appeal to a design. We recently launched our Heritage range which gives you that soft velvet feel but adds another dimension to a design. Our latest velvet to launch Richmond is a needlecord velvet with a distressed finish, less lustre than typical velvets; Richmond provides a soft handle with a beautiful finished effect. Popularity is high for the new velvet styles, and we can only see this increasing.
